Most homeowners upgrade the wrong half of the door. They buy a heavier deadbolt, feel safer, and leave the part that actually holds that bolt exactly as the builder left it: a thin plate held by two short screws biting into soft trim. When a Toronto entry door gets forced, the lock almost never breaks. The wood around it does.

What follows is the inspection worth doing before you spend anything. What to look at, what each thing tells you, and where the line sits between a Saturday fix and a job for a door technician.

Why the frame gives out before the lock

A deadbolt throws a steel bolt about an inch into a hole in the jamb. The strike plate is the metal collar around that hole. Under impact, force does not travel through the bolt. It travels through the plate, into the jamb, and from the jamb into whatever framing sits behind it. If the plate is small and the screws are three-quarters of an inch long, all of that energy lands on a thin strip of pine. Pine loses.

It is why forced-entry damage looks so similar from house to house: the lock still works, the bolt is straight, and the jamb is split from the strike opening, running up and down the grain. The lock did its job. Nothing behind it was asked to help.

The five-minute check

Start with the screws

Open the door, back out one screw from the deadbolt strike plate and look at it. Three-quarters of an inch is builder-standard, and it is the most common weak point on a Toronto entry door. Those screws stop inside the jamb board. They never reach the stud behind it, which is the only part of the wall with real strength.

Read the gap

With the door closed and unlocked, look at the gap along the lock edge. It should be even top to bottom, roughly the width of a nickel. A gap that widens toward the top usually means the door has dropped on its hinges. One that pinches at the bottom often means the frame has moved with the seasons. Either way the bolt is no longer entering the strike straight, and a bolt that enters at an angle transfers force badly.

Test the throw

Lock the deadbolt with the door open, then with it closed. If the key turns easily in the air but needs a shoulder against the door when closed, the bolt is dragging on the strike. People live with this for years and call it a sticky lock. It is a misalignment, and it slowly chews the bolt, the cylinder and the plate.

Look at the jamb itself

Press a fingernail into the wood around the strike. Soft, dark or spongy wood near the bottom of the frame means water has been getting in, which is common on doors with a worn sweep or a tired threshold. A rotten jamb will not hold a long screw any better than a short one, and no lock upgrade fixes it.

Do not skip the hinge side

Security attention goes to the lock side, but a door is only as fixed as its other edge. Pull on the hinge leaves. Loose or backed-out hinge screws let the whole slab shift, which throws off the alignment you just checked and gives a forced entry a head start.

The screw upgrade, and what it does not solve

Swapping the short screws for three-inch ones that reach the framing behind the jamb is the highest-return change most people can make to an entry door. It costs very little, takes ten minutes, and moves the failure point from a trim board to the structure of the wall.

Two cautions. Drive them straight, because a long screw run in at an angle can pull the jamb sideways and leave the door binding. And it only works if there is something solid to reach. In many older Toronto homes, particularly where a frame has been shimmed heavily to square a settled opening, there is a void behind the jamb and the screw spins in air. That is the point where the fix becomes carpentry rather than hardware, and it is the usual reason a residential door repair visit turns into frame work.

Box strikes, security strikes and reinforcement plates

A standard strike plate is a flat rectangle with two screws. Fine for a bathroom, weak for a front door.

A box strike adds a steel cup behind the plate so the bolt is surrounded rather than sitting in a drilled hole. It stops the wood crumbling around the bolt over time.

A security strike is longer, usually has four screw holes and thicker steel, and is designed to spread force across a wider section of jamb instead of concentrating it at one point.

A full-length reinforcement is a steel channel running a significant portion of the jamb, tying the strike into the framing along its whole length. It is the strongest option and the most involved to fit, because the door still has to close cleanly on it afterward.

Which one is right has less to do with the product than with the frame it is going into. A security strike on a rotted jamb is decoration.

When the lock genuinely is the problem

Sometimes the hardware really is at fault. A cylinder worn to the point that it turns with any similar key, a bolt that no longer throws its full length, a lock that was rekeyed badly, or a deadbolt that was never the right grade for an exterior door. If you have moved into a place and do not know who holds keys, or a lock has started to feel gritty and vague, that is a straightforward lock change in Toronto rather than a structural job.

The distinction matters because the two problems feel identical from the doorstep. A door that is hard to lock could be a failing cylinder or a frame that has moved a few millimetres. Putting a new lock on a misaligned door just sends a new lock into the same fight.

After a break-in, sequence matters

The instinct is to fit a stronger lock immediately. It is the wrong order. Damaged frames need to be assessed and rebuilt or replaced first, because the new hardware has to anchor into something. Premium locks on a split jamb produce a door that looks repaired and is not. Questions people ask

Are long screws really enough on their own?

On a sound frame with solid framing behind it, they are a meaningful improvement and the best value change available. On a frame that is rotted, hollow behind the jamb, or already split, they are not a substitute for repair.

Is a smart lock more secure than a deadbolt?

A smart lock changes how the bolt is operated, not how the door resists force. The bolt, the strike and the jamb do the same work either way. Convenience and access control are real benefits. Physical strength is not one of them by default.

My door only sticks in winter. Should I worry?

Seasonal movement is normal in older houses, but a door that binds hard enough to need a push is telling you the gap has closed unevenly. It is worth correcting, because the same misalignment that makes it stick is what stops the bolt seating fully.

Can I fit a security strike myself?

Often yes, if the existing mortise matches and the jamb is in good condition. The part that catches people out is the chiselling when the new plate is larger. Cut it shallow and the door will not close. Cut it deep and the plate sits proud and the bolt drags.
