A garage door that starts down, stops, and rolls back up is almost never a broken door. It is the safety reversing system doing exactly what it was designed to do, based on information that happens to be wrong.
Photo-eye sensors have been required on residential garage door openers in the United States for decades. Two small units sit near the floor on either side of the opening, one sending an infrared beam and one receiving it. Break the beam while the door is closing and the door reverses. In Southwest Florida, several local conditions break that beam without anything actually being in the way.
Sun glare, and why it is a winter problem here
Infrared sensors read a beam. Strong direct sunlight contains plenty of infrared, and when the sun sits low enough to shine straight into the receiving eye, the receiver cannot pick its own beam out of the background.
In Naples and the surrounding area this shows up most on west-facing and east-facing garages during the cooler months, when the sun tracks lower across the sky. The signature is unmistakable once you know it: the door refuses to close for roughly the same half hour each day, and behaves perfectly the rest of the time.
The fix is shading rather than replacement. Small hoods or shields over the receiving eye, or repositioning the sensor slightly, solves it without touching the opener. Swapping the sending and receiving units to opposite sides also works in many cases, because only the receiver is affected.
Humidity, condensation and corrosion
Coastal humidity does two things to sensor assemblies. It condenses on the lens, which scatters the beam, and it corrodes the terminals and the wire splices, which weakens the signal.
Condensation on the lens looks like a dirty sensor and clears with a soft dry cloth. Corrosion is the more persistent problem. The low-voltage wire to the sensors is often stapled along the wall and spliced with basic connectors, and those splices sit in humid air for years. A connection that is green or chalky is producing an intermittent signal, and intermittent is worse than broken because it makes the fault look random.
Salt air accelerates all of this for properties nearer the coast. On those homes the sensor brackets themselves also rust, which lets the eye drift out of alignment as the bracket loses stiffness.
Insects, spiders and lovebugs
A spider building across the face of a sensor blocks the beam completely. This is one of the most common service calls in the region and one of the easiest to rule out.
Lovebug season adds a different version: bodies accumulate on the lens surface and on the bracket, and a film builds up that weakens rather than blocks the beam. The door then works sometimes and not others, which people usually blame on the opener.
Wiping both lenses with a dry cloth takes seconds and should be the first thing anyone tries. If the door closes normally afterward, the diagnosis is done.
Alignment, and the wall that moved
The two eyes have to point at each other. Most units have an indicator light that is steady when aligned and flickering or dark when not.
Alignment is lost when something bumps a bracket: a bicycle, a trash bin, a car door, a pressure washer. It is also lost slowly, when a bracket loosens from vibration over hundreds of door cycles. Both sensors should sit no more than six inches above the floor, and both at the same height.
A door that reverses at a consistent point in its travel rather than randomly is usually not a sensor problem at all. That pattern points to the opener force or travel settings, or to something in the door itself binding at that point. Diagnosing whether the door reverses when closing because of the sensors or because of the opener is the step that decides what actually needs fixing.
A five-minute check before calling anyone
- Look at both sensor indicator lights. One steady, one flickering or off means misalignment or a wiring fault.
- Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth. Check for webs, insect bodies and condensation.
- Check that nothing is parked, stacked or leaning in the beam path, including a garbage bin lid.
- Gently move each bracket. If it shifts easily, it needs tightening.
- Note the time of day the problem happens. A consistent time strongly suggests sun angle.
- Look at the wire runs for pinched, stapled-through or corroded sections.
